What does sustainability mean in the context of fashion?
Personally I think it means thinking ahead, and most of the time we are caught up in the speed of everything, and we can use that as an excuse to make these hasty decisions that aren’t necessarily that good for the vitality or community of the world. It takes time to get used to the idea of planning ahead – so for me its taking that time to think about it, because if you do, you can’t avoid the right choice.
Australians are the largest consumers of new clothing per capita (behind the U.S.), how does that stat make you feel and what advice would you give around re-thinking how we buy our clothes?
It makes me feel awful….[so..] I [thinking]… how do you trigger a positive thought process instead of giving negative views….focusing on the good, and something you can actually do in real life to make a difference, but also something that would be really nice for yourself. So the advice I would give would be look at your wardrobe as a collection …… only add things that that will make the other objects easier for you. So eventually you don’t have to think about what your throwing on, because everything kind of works and your style becomes innate, essentially it’s a reflection of what’s going on in your heart and your head. Pursuing it in this way, as a consumer, reduce the amount of excess choices, and also helps you get to know yourself a bit better.
Do you have a love story in your wardrobe? If so, what is it?
I have so many love stories in my wardrobe, actually I wore these jeans today, because I love them, they have a stripe on the side. Because I wore them so much, they started ripping and ripping, and with a lot of denim I’ve had in the past that I’ve over loved, I’ve given it away or thrown it away, or making patches. So I started to fix things, I always thought denim was beyond my reach……but once I learned I realised it’s the easiest thing to fix. And its become this ongoing thing, every couple of months there is a new rip and its like a new little scar, a new little story. And people keep complimenting me on them more and more, the more it gets ripped seemingly. So that’s my current love story.
