While these are very strange times for us all, we hope you see this forced down time as an opportunity for true connection, rest and recalibration. Kitty O’Meara puts things into perspective for us and highlights how this can be a time of healing, rather than isolation:
“And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they have been healed.”
We’ve put together a list of really simple ways you can utilise this down time to come out the other side stronger, more connected and re-centred than before.
Limit your time watching the news
While it’s important to remain educated and aware of the current COVID-19 situation, too much time spent watching or listening to the media can be draining and damaging to your sense of wellbeing. We recommend checking in with the news each morning and evening but avoid having your TV on in the background all day. Instead, enjoy some quiet time or focus on meaningful conversations with your loved ones.
Check on your neighbours
Now more than ever, it’s so important to support each other and our local community. How do we show up for each other in times of fear and uncertainty? Pandemics and other crisis situations are a reminder that we truly are all in this together. To come out the other side as a healthy society, we must look outside of our immediate circle and lend a hand where required. Something as simple as a smile can go a long way – or a spare roll of toilet paper!
Try a new recipe
While the supermarket shelves may be a little scarce, this is the perfect opportunity to get creative with what is available and expand your cooking skills outside of your usual repertoire. Remember that large chain supermarkets aren’t the only place to shop! The Source Bulk foods and Scoop Wholefoods are great for waste-free bulk purchases.
Avoid panic buying and for what you do need, look to your local (independent) baker, butcher and wine stores. Many of these businesses are still offering delivery and shopping small is a sure-fire way to get your local economy back on its feet as quickly as possible. Community Organics and Door Step Organics are some of our favourites home delivery fresh product boxes for Sydney-siders. See what’s available in your area! You may even find your favourite café is offering take away and home delivery!
Get in the garden
Social distancing doesn’t have to mean nature distancing! Connection to nature is essential for and overall sense of wellbeing and can be incredibly grounding during times of uncertainty. With perishable items being a little light on shelves, there’s no better time to tend that vege garden! If you live in a city, check out Milkwood Permaculture’s guide to urban farming:
Exercise and meditate
Self-isolation doesn’t mean you can’t keep moving your body and stretching your mind. There’s no denying physical activity boost emotional and mental health, as well a strong immune system. With so many workouts, yoga flows and meditations channels available online, you can tune in anywhere, anytime. Some of our favourites are:
Support small business
Large corporations and businesses can absorb costs and temporary loss of income in a way that smaller and more local businesses cannot. In addition, ethically based businesses often have much lower profit margins than larger corporations, due to higher cost of goods (the cost of organic cotton, vs non-organic or synthetic fibres is indeed much higher), paying workers a fair wage and so on. This is a truly heartbreaking time for a lot of people, and it’s up to individuals to sustain a strong local and ethically-based economy. Use this period of at-home retreat to jump online and support your favourite Australian businesses! A shout out to some of our favourites; Mukti Organics for the best skincare around, InBed Store for gorgeous bed linen and Who Gives a Crap (this is a no-brainer) and Tamburlaine Organic Wines for our favourite organic drop!
These are strange and unchartered times for us all. While the future is uncertain, we truly are in this together. No matter your current situation, we hope that you can use this time at home to retreat, rest, recalibrate and creatively re-design the kind of life and world you want to live in.
