Spotlight: Gammin Threads
In recognition of NAIDOC Week 2020, we are spotlighting some of the most inspiring Indigenous creatives around. Here we talk to the Tahnee Edwards the Founder of Gammin Threads.
What is your full name?
Where were you born and where do you live now?
I was born on Kaurna country (Adelaide) and now live on Wurundjeri country (Melbourne)
How long have you been running Gammin Threads for?
Just over 2 years as a side hustle. I unofficially launched during NAIDOC week in 2018, I was inspired by the theme ‘Because of her, we can” along with working at an Aboriginal family violence org to create my first designs around respecting the blak matriarchy.
Tell us about your designs and the meaning behind some of your pieces?
I love typography, pop culture, humour and empowering women, so my designs reflect this. Representing little bits of our culture that aren’t always in mainstream society is important to me as representation matters. We’re an incredibly proud and diverse mob, with some common traits like humour and having skinny ankles lol. Some of my designs are like cheeky inside jokes, so if ya don’t get it, it’s a chance to ask the question and learn more.
Tell us what NAIDOC Week means to you?
Along with celebrating our deadly culture and achievements, it’s also a time to reflect on how far we have come and to always be honouring what our ancestors fought for. It’s also an inspiring time to see what other mob around the country are showing off and celebrating.
How can others get involved with NAIDOC Week in a meaningful way?
I think definitely read up and learn about the history of how NAIDOC week came about, also see if your local council or work are doing anything for it. There might be a flag raising ceremony or exhibition on. The NAIDOC website has some good ideas on how you can get involved https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/plan-your-event
You can also wear the flag colours or some merch from a blak business to show your support for first nations people 🙂
